Mockhawk 2023 Tournament

We are excited to once again host the annual Mockhawk Tournament. Registration is now open here

What is the Mockhawk?

Since 2015 (excluding 2020), the James Lewis Family Miami University Mock Trial Program has proudly hosted the Mockhawk: a one-day, two-round tournament for high schools competing in the Ohio Center for Law Related Education's ("OCLRE") mock trial competition. The 2023 Mockhawk will be hosted on Sunday December 17, 2023 at the Farmer School of Business in Oxford, Ohio.

Annually, the Mockhawk attracts top-tier competition. Competitors include State Champions, Empire Champions, State Runner-Ups, State Qualifiers, and more. The Mockhawk is the first opportunity across Ohio for you and your team to test your case, theory, and performance against other fantastic teams. Usually, the to-be Ohio State Champion is among the field somewhere--and it could be you.

How does the Mockhawk work?

We provide only the best judges for competition--people who really know what good mock trial looks like. We select our judges exclusively from the coaches, competitors, and alumni of the Miami Mock Trial Program. It's safe to say we know mock trial. If you want to know what we think about your case, the Mockhawk is your chance to make it happen.

The Mockhawk runs just like your Districts and Regionals competitions. This is a two-round tournament with two scoring judges per round. We use nearly the same ballot as the OCLRE (we omit the "team score" element). We award highest-ranking attorneys and witnesses individual awards, and team awards to the best teams.

How can I register my team?

There is a tournament fee assessed per team. But, to make sure we do not take home any profit from this tournament, we calculate this fee after registration. Registering now costs nothing. After registration closes, our Tournament Director, Ben Sandlin, will provide fee information to registered teams. In the past, we have been able to keep the tournament fee to $120-$140 per team.

Historically, we have hosted at least one team per school who signs up. If we can support additional teams from any schools, teams beyond the first team are permitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. At this stage of registration, we ask you to list the maximum number of teams you could bring. That does not guarantee that we will have space in the field for every possible team to compete from your school.

Miami Mock Trial proudly partners with the OCLRE to make this tournament happen. We are proud to cooperate with the OCLRE to bring you the Mockhawk.

If your team wants to test itself against some of the best, judged by some of the best, this is the tournament for you. Answer a couple of questions below and you’ll join us in December. If you have questions in the meantime, please contact Ben Sandlin at BenSandlin.MMT@gmail.com. Registration closes at 5:00pm EST on Friday, October 20, 2023.
